چکیده

In response to the high levels of dextran being obtained in raw sugars produced at Jamaican sugar factories, newer methods have been investigated to assess the accuracy and appropriateness for routine analysis of dextran in factory products. Two methods, the Dextran And Sucrose Assay (DASA) developed by Optical Activity® with field work in Jamaica and the Monoclonal Antibody (MCA) test developed by Midland®, were investigated and compared for reliability in producing data for an effective dextran treatment programme. Although both methods have been proposed as methods of choice for determination of dextran in real factory conditions, the reproducibility and reliability of both are questionable and emphasise the need for further refinement.

The Effects of Chemical Purification on the Color of Thin and Thick Juices in Sugar Beet Factories

Background and Objectives: Recognizing the impurities of sugar beet and also comparing different methods of juice purification have shown that the chemical purification based on lime and carbon dioxide is really efficient and economic in the sugar industry. Factories have to control and improve purification stages to achieve clear juice with high chemical purity, low color, minimum hardness, su...

Personal Computers as Data Loggers in the South Africa Sugar Industry

The low cost of the personal computer (PC) has made it the ideal vehicle for monitoring processes in factories and laboratories. Software developed at the Sugar Milling Research Institute (SMRI) has resulted in two PC systems that are capable of simultaneously receiving a number of signals, monitoring these graphically in real time and of storing the data for subsequent analysis. A ten-channel ...

Monitoring sugar beet rooting depth irrigated with recycled waste water and different irrigation methods for water savings in an arid climate

ABSTRACT- A detailed understanding of crop rooting systems will facilitate water use reduction, optimized nutrient uptake and irrigation scheduling more efficiently. A field experiment was conducted during 2005-2006 to investigate sugar beet rooting depth growth, irrigated with three irrigation methods (subsurface drip, surface drip and furrow) and two water qualities (recycled wastewater: EC= ...

Enzymic Reduction of Dextran in Process - Laboratory Evaluation of Dextranases

The dextran content of both mixed juice and very high pol sugar has shown an increase in recent seasons. Laboratory trials have been used to show that thermally stable dextranase could be used to reduce the dextran concentration in evaporator syrup when high levels of dextran are unavoidable. Dextranase treatment of diffuser juices is unsuitable because of the high temperature, low Brix conditi...
